I’m planning a trip with my mother to Washington DC this December for my birthday and I’m trying to budget how much to bring for the two of us, between Friday the 18th and Monday the 21st.

I already looked at lodging and air fair, but I need to know how much I should expect to spend for food/meals, attractions, souvenirs, a little shopping, emergency "oh crap, I forgot my toothbrush" runs, and the like.

The main goal is to be comfortable but not go overboard with the spending.

Also, if you have any suggestions for things to do, places to eat, shops to visit, etc, in and around DC (our hotel is in Arlington, VA) that’d be cool if you would share your infinite wisdom.

My mom’s in her mid sixties and I’m in my early twenties.
It should also be noted that we have no intention of renting a car.
Our hotel is in Crystal City.

For three days I would budget about $20-25 per person for the Metro (you can get to almost anywhere in DC on it and it’s much cheaper than taxis). Do you know where in Arlington you are staying? If it’s Rosslyn than Georgetown is just across the river and you can actually walk there. But this is one of the more expensive neighborhoods of DC. Most museums are free so you don’t have to worry about paying for those. The museums that do have a fee (e.g. The Newseum and the Spy Museum) are about $20. You will probably end up paying at least $10 per person for each lunch and dinner. Pentagon City is a really nice shopping mall. Ballston is also a nice place to shop. And both of these places are located in Arlington. Definitely check out Georgetown. The have great shopping, bars, and restaurants.

I plan to go in the spring and I would like to know your opinion on the top three places I should visit. If you have any lodging suggestions those would also be appreciated. Thanks. (Oh yeah, these places don’t have to be in D.C., like the Arlington cemetary isn’t.) Thanks again!

Going in the spring go when the Cherry trees are in bloom. Kind of hard to predict but it is very nice. Lincoln Memorial has the Vietnam Wall next to it and the Korean War Memorial very close by. The Capitol, arrange a tour with your congressman and avoid the big lines. Across the street from the capitol is the Library of Congress Jefferson building which is impressive inside, usually short lines to get in. The Smithsonian museums are also very impressive. A fairly good way to see a lot is to go to Arlington Cemetery and buy the tour mobile package. It will bring you to the major attractions and save you a lot of walking. I have a travel blog posted here to look over some pictures to give you an idea of what DC has to offer. Please post a comment if you visit my site. http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog/washdcmike/washington_dc/tpod.html

This is Maddie, I am going to Italy for 19 days and I have three dogs (2puggles &1bulldog). I live in Arlington, VA, so therefore the prices around here for kennels/dog lodging is REALLY high. I’ve asked people/friends, but everyone works ALL day.Does anybody know an alternative or another way?
PLEASE, help me…!Thanks, everyone…

See if you can find a college student, who likely won’t work a ton, to stay at your home while your away. I’ve seen lots advertised on craigslist.com.

1. In the 1991 road movie Thelma and Louise, which actress played Thelma?
2. In France it is at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, in America at Arlington Cemetery, in the UK it is in Westminster Abbey. What is it?
3. In which sport do all championship races take place over a 2000m course?
4. The house was originally called Alveton Lodge and was once the home of the Earls of Shrewsbury. In 1924
it was sold to a private company and opened to the public. By what name is this theme park, 15 miles east of
Stoke-on-Trent, now known?
5.. In which Oscar-winning movie did the death of the racehorse Khartoum make cinema-goers the world over gasp?

1. geena davis
2.tomb of unknown soldier
3.rowing?
4.alton towers
5.godfather

A few years ago I used to take lessons at Crystal’s in Arlington, and if they’re still offering them, I really don’t want to make that drive every Sunday night. Does anyone know if the Mason’s lodge on MLK is still offering them?

what do you mean by "swing out"? Swing out as in swing dancing? As in Lindy Hop?

You’ll probably want to go to check out the Dallas Swing Dance Society:

The bad thing about kennels is your dogs can pick up an infection, or kennel cough, and to beat that the prices are ridiculous.

I would ask a family member or close friend, someone you trust. If you absolutely can’t find anyone, go on craigslist.net and try to find a petsitter. Ask for references and home check.
